There are many other microcontrollers and microcontroller platforms available for physical computing. Parallax Basic Stamp, Netmedias BX-24, Phidgets, MITs Handyboard, and many others offer similar functionality. All of these tools take the messy details of microcontroller programming and wrap it up in an easy-to-use package. Arduino also simplifies the process of working with microcontrollers, but it offers some advantage for teachers, students, and interested amateurs over other systems.
Arduino is an open-source electronics platform based on easy-to-use hardware and software. Arduino boards are able to read inputs - light on a sensor, a finger on a button, or a Twitter message - and turn it into an output - activating a motor, turning on an LED, publishing something online. You can tell your board what to do by sending a set of instructions to the microcontroller on the board. To do so you use the Arduino programming language (based on Wiring), and the Arduino Software (IDE), based on Processing.
There are only few devices, which must be soldered on the board. The most complicated and time consuming operation is the cutting of the pin headers. I bought in eBay 40 pin 2.54 mm female headers, which I cut according the needed pin count. For that purpose I use small jigsaw and after that sandpaper. It can be seen that the Arduino Nano board is positioned at the edge of the conversion board to ease the access to the USB connector.
Flash memory is 16KB or 32KB that all depends on the Atmega board i.e Atmega168 comes with 16KB of flash memory while Atmega328 comes with a flash memory of 32KB. Flash memory is used for storing code. The 2KB of memory out of total flash memory is used for a bootloader.
